Howling Wolf Photo

For Janine and I, this photo of a howling wolf was without a doubt one of our all time amazing experiences in nature.

We were in our truck when we spotted this beautiful wolf.  I quickly stopped, shut off the engine and grabbed my camera.  Much to our amazement, the wolf stopped very close to us, and didn’t even give us a glance – he acted like we weren’t even there.  Needless to say, I started shooting like mad!

After standing near us for a minute or so, he began to howl!  Talking about an amazing event – both of us had goose bumps of excitement, my hands were actually shaking.  He howled numerous times, even after he had laid down.  To top it off, the sun began to crest the horizon just enough to backlite his fur and breath – I think this was about 4:00 a.m. in June.

This was back in the days I shot film, I was worried I was going to blow the exposure.  This was at the beginning of the trip, I almost wanted to leave right then and run straight to the lab.  I waited, but was very relieved to see the images were sharp and exposed correctly!

Monday I will share what happened next.
