Does it “work”?

A Brown, Katmai National Park, Alaska.

I was hoping to capture the speed, grace and power of the coastal brown bear. One of the advantages of being at a place like the Katmai Coast is there are endless opportunities to photograph the bears chasing salmon. In this case a used a very slow shutter speed (1/15th of a second) to blur the action. Interested in opinions, does this “work” for you?

Details: 1/15th of a second, f/10 ISO 100. Olympus OM-1 body, Olympus 150-400mm lens at 150mm.

  1. Hi Ron, I always enjoy your blog posts. In response to your question about this image, I think it would work better if the background was blurred but bear (at least head) was not. I don’t see how that could be accomplished with a single capture, though, given the way the bear was moving ( up and down as well as laterally). For me, this image only works with an accompanying explanation and if the viewer takes the time to look at the image thoughtfully.
