Doyle Brunson

Doyle Brunson

The legendary poker player, Doyle Brunson at the WPT Festa al Lago tournament, at the Bellagio, in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was a treat to watch and photograph such a famous player!

Needless to say, we have now moved on from Moab.

Since I’m covering this tournament for our travel stock coverage of Las Vegas, and not as a news event, I decided to head back to camp on this day, after getting photos of most the big names. I mean, what am I going to miss? It isn’t like Michael Phelps, winner of 14 Olympic gold medals is going to walk into the room.

You guessed it – literally minutes after I left, Michael Phelps – probably the biggest celebrity in the world right now, walked into the room!Read More

North Window and Turret Arch

Turret Arch through North Window, Arches National Park.

After fighting the crowds at Delicate Arch, we decided to get to this location an hour before sunrise to be sure to have the what I thought was the ideal location.

We enjoyed a half hour of quiet darkeness, then a half hour of beautiful pre sunrise glow, and finally the first light of day, and never saw or heard another person.  Only the sound of two ravens flying through the opening – when compared to silience, it is surprising how much noise thier wings can make.  This was definitely the best morning of the trip!

This is a little different perspective of this frequently visited and photographed arch. This isn’t a better perspective, except that we were all alone – a long way from the large crowd gathered at the end of the trail head. A crowd that actually began to yell at each other as they “ruined” each others photos – it really tainted what should have been a wonderful evening.Read More

False Kiva, Canyonlands National Park, Utah.

This amazing location is kept fairly quite by the Park Service, as it is tucked away under a beautiful alcove on an un-marked trail. It isn’t really a Kiva (site for religious rituals), but it is a historic native American site.Read More

Another aerial photo.

I have to give a giant shout out to our pilot Tim, he was the best. His family represents 4 or 5 generations in the Moab area, he had wonderful stories of all the areas we flew over, I could have listened to him all day.Read More

Waterpocket Fold

Waterpocket Fold, Capitol Reef National Park, Utah.

My biggest motivation for doing an aerial photography session was to photograph the Waterpocket Fold in Capitol Reef. This 100 mile long fold in the earth is fascinating; but from the ground, it is really hard to appreciate the magnitude of this feature, and even harder to capture it in a photograph.

I can’t adequately explain how it was formed. If you want to learn more, I recommend taking a gander at the Park Service site on the formation of the Waterpocket Fold.

Here are many more photos of Capitol Reef National Park, Utah.

The Needles, Canyonland National Park

The Needles, Canyonlands National Park, near Moab, Utah.

The open area in the middle of this scene is know as Chesler Park.

We spent 3.5 hours yesterday flying around Southeastern Utah. All I can say is wow! Everywhere I looked there were fascinating places just waiting to be explored – slot canyons, alcoves, buttes and so much more – just cool stuff everywhere.

The Needles District really stood out. I would love to spend some time exploring this fascinating region.
