Lupine Bear

Brown Bear, Lake Clark National Park, Alaska.

Every year I strive to capture brown bears in the fields of lupine, but most years we have little success. This year however was completely different! We had more photo opportunities with bears in the lupine then in my other 16 years visiting Lake Clark N.P. combined! I think it was in part because it was a great year for lupine – it was everywhere. But maybe more importantly was the abundance of angelica amongst the lupine. The bears don’t eat lupine, so you usually see them quickly walking through the fields, but they eat a lot of angelica, so this kept them in the fields for much longer.

Alaik Glacier. Back from an awesome photo tour in Kenai Fjords National Park! We got really lucky on the weather, we got around into the bay Thursday night just before a big storm. We practically had Alaik and northwestern bays to ourselves, and the weather was nice in the protected bays. We returned to Seward today on Monday just as the storm subsided. Iphone photo.

A Brown bear, Katmai National Park, Alaska.

We had particularly good success photographing brown bears chasing salmon this August along the Katmai National Park Coast. I’ll keep sharing different versions of this action from time to time this fall.
