A version of this scene is on the cover of the first book project I was ever involved with nearly 20 years ago! I still can’t pass by this location without capturing more images! This is from last week looking into Northwestern Fjord, Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska.

Kayaking last week in front of Northwestern Glacier, Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska. Such an amazing day, sunny and no wind!

Mountain goat with a newborn kid this week in Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska. These guys were right next to the oceans edge – a real treat!

Back from guiding a wonderful photo tour in Kenai Fjords National Park! We saw 10 plus bears the first day from the train and helicopter! Lots of wildlife and amazing scenery including orcas and humpbacks. Had a special surprise the last day when we saw a group of 4 fin whales! the Fin whale is the second largest animal on earth reaching almost 70 feet! Unfortunately there are possibly fewer than 100,000 left in the world.
This is from inside Bear Glacier Lagoon. It is so fun to paddle amongst these huge ice bergs after having flown over them the day before in a helicopter with the doors off. We access this lagoon in a specially designed jet boat, then switch to kayaks. More photos to come!

Tomorrow I head to Anchorage to begin a very long awaited Kenai Fjords Photo Tour! We had to cancel this last year due to Covid, and considering some of the folks had signed up over a year before that, it means they have waited some two and a half years for this trip!
I think the wait will be worth it. We will take the train on Gold Star Service to Seward, then helicopter with doors off to this incredible lagoon which has even extra ice in it this year. The next day we will return to this lagoon in kayaks thanks to a specially designed jet boat. Finally we will spend 4 full days on a yacht in Kenai Fjords National Park – I can’t wait! I won’t always have cell service, but I’ll post when I can, otherwise I hope to have a lot of new images in a week! Cheers!

I have been telling my guests about HappyWhale for years, but had never taken the time to upload photos to it until just recently. Frankly, it is way cooler then I expected!
What is HappyWhale? In short, it is a place where you can upload your whale photos, and then their state of the art processing algorithm is able to identify the actual individual, and then allows you to track the whale as it travels around the world and other people share photos. It is also of value to the scientific community, so it feels good to help. Truthfully, I find it addicting. It is interesting, most of the humpback I have photographed winter in Hawaii as expected, but a couple travel to Mexico instead. It will be interesting to see how many of the Kenai Fjords travel to Mexico. I find myself wishing there were more data points so you can view more of each whales history. Some are well covered, like this one (Cornucopia) I saw bubble-net feeding in Chatham Straight – it has over 50 sightings just in Alaska!
HappyWhale is the vision of Ted Cheeseman. I have worked for Ted many times in Antarctica, and he has an incredible passion for whales. So, if you can, take the time to upload your sightings. Many cameras these days have built in GPS. Between this, and an accurate date in time, and your camera has done most of the work, uploading is easy! There is a way to name your own whale, and going forward, even buy an NFT, how is the for cutting edge! Check it out.

It is interesting to compare these two Alaska puffins. I captured these closeups last week at the Sealife Center.
