I love brown bears, but now I’m shifting to their big white cousins to the north as I head out today to lead a couple of tours Hugh Rose featuring polar bears, auroras and what should be some amazing autumn color!
Seward Highway
I have had a lot of fun this past week traveling between Ketchikan and Seward as part of an assignment for Petro Marine Services / Shoreside Petroleum. I wrapped it up last night with my favorite kind of photography – working from a helicopter with the doors off!
Aurora over Seward Campground
Here is a first – I photographed the aurora last night for over an hour in shorts and flip-flops! Far cry from my typical aurora clothing where I’m more likely to be in bunny boots!
Only a couple of people in the entire campground had any idea this was happening overhead last night at 2:00 a.m. I had hoped to stay up for the arrival of the Holland America cruise ship in hopes of getting the aurora over it, but was just too tired to stay up all night.
2016 Alaska Whale and Bear Photo Tour

This brown bear catching a salmon at Anan was one of 18 black or brown bears we photographed there this year.
Again next year I’m doing another Alaska Whale / Glacier / Bear photo tour aboard a yacht in Southeast Alaska. As great as this years trip was, I think next year will be even better! Here is why.
- It will be longer, and will include an extra day and night on the yacht.
- We will start in Ketchikan and end in downtown Juneau and this trip includes lodging and a welcome dinner at Cape Fox, the nicest hotel in Ketchikan.
- I’m going to be using a beautiful 87 foot yacht – 50% bigger than the yacht I have used in the past, but same number of people.
- This yacht has more areas to relax, but also more areas to photograph from, including covered areas nearly 360 degrees around the ship. Views from onboard are also excellent.
- I’m using the longest running operator in Southeast, these guys are the ones that started the Southeast cruising in the early 80’s and know all the secret spots.
- The extra day gives us more time with whales, but still allows for at least two bear viewing locations including the world famous Anan where at one time this year we had 4 black bears and 4 brown bears fishing at the same time!
