Western sandpipers earlier this week, Cordova, Alaska.

Home from a wonderful week in Cordova!  We had great weather and lots of birds.  This year, for the first time I was able to watch and photograph the migration from the Delta, something few people are able to experience.  Millions of birds pass through this strategic location every spring.    This image was from Hartney Bay.

I’m home for one day, unpacking, repacking and off to the Grand Canyon and Zion!

Now that I’m seeing more migrating birds passing through Seward, I’m getting excited to be heading back over to Cordova this Saturday for the amazing shorebird migration – first time in two years.  Like two years ago, I’ll be helping guide two photo / bird tours while I’m there, one for Discovery Voyages, and one for Cheeseman’s Ecological Tours.

Words, and for that matter, photos are unable to do justice to the amazing sight of seeing tens of thousands of shorebirds flying, in beautiful flocks – see the color and patterns change as they “dance” in the air is mesmerizing.

Ice Road Truckers

The Dalton Highway was featured for a number of years of the TV show Ice Road Truckers.  Here is a truck driving that same “highway”, late and night under an aurora sky, as it makes its way towards Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.   This is a combination of two exposures, one for the bright lights of the truck, and a second, much longer one for the aurora.  I exposed the truck for 2.5 seconds at f/1.4 and iso 1600, then once the truck left the frame, I captured a second image with a 6 second exposure.

It has been a wet month – so when the sun popped out last night, I couldn’t resist photographing the mountains across from our house, even though I have a million photos of them already – now I have a million and one! 🙂

This just arrived in the mail this afternoon!  The photo was from last June’s bear tour to Lake Clark National Park.  This calender is published by Greatland Graphics – they do a wonderful series of Alaska calenders.  They have been a valued customer for many many years, and I’m proud to be a part of many of their beautiful products!
