Spring Cubs!

Brown / Grizzly Bear, Lake Clark National Park, Alaska.

This was from day one of two amazing back to back Alaska Bear Photo Tours! So much great action! We had two sows with sets up spring cubs – Agro seen here with triplets, but a second sow with twins who arrived the same day I did. One of the guides joked that spring cubs seem to always arrive when I do, and it does seem like it. Plus a sow with a third summer cub and at the end of the trip we had a sow with second summer triplets. Plus, so much more!

A humpback whale in front of Northwestern Glacier. I had no idea they would swim through the narrow opening in the moraine and feed in this ice choked fjord! Very cool to see last week. Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska.

Orca, also known as a killer whale, in early morning light.

Just home from my second Kenai Fjords Photo Tour – I was hoping it could be almost as good as the first one. Didn’t expect it could possibly be better, but it was! Lots to share in the days ahead.

I’m really proud of my Kenai Fjords Photo Tour as I is so unique. Other tours base out of the town of Seward. So while they are trying to find a place for breakfast, we are photographing orcas in beautiful light without another boat or person in sight!

Orca Research

Dan Olsen talking to the guests and crew on our last night in Kenai Fjords National Park,

On our last night in the bay with orcas, local orca researcher Dan Olsen and two researchers from the San Juans boated over and explained their ongoing research project. Then, later that evening, my buddy Dan paddled over in his kayak with his id books and gave us a master class on the resident orcas of Southcentral Alaska! It was so cool to be there with Dan as orcas swam by and have him show us the id photos in the book and provide the history! Everyone loved the experience, especially me! Here is much more info on Dan’s orcas research; North Gulf Oceanic Society.

Headed back to Anchorage today for the welcome dinner for my second Kenai Fjords Photo Trip. I hope it is good as the last!

Bear Glacier from a helicopter. To put this in perspective, the glacier face here is about 150 feet tall! This was from last week in Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska.
