We were fortunate enough to see and spend time with lots of leopard seals this year in Antarctica.  They are intimidating looking animals!

We are a bit behind on our website updates, but Janine worked hard while I was in Antarctica and was able to update our section of Maui Photos on our website from our wonderful time spent there just over a year ago.

Showcase image of Bryce National Park in the current issue of Outdoor Photographer.

I have subscribed to Outdoor Photographer many, many years – since my days as a beginning amateur.  Back then I would devour every issue as I was so hungry to read and learn anything and everything about outdoor photography.  I still subscribe today, now mainly to keep up with trends and friends – I am friends in one way or another with the authors of every major article in one recent issue.

So given this history, I must say I was very excited when they contacted us before my recent Antarctica trip looking for a high-res comp of an image for cover consideration.  That would be cool!  Days before leaving, they told us they would definitely use the image, if not for the cover as a Showcase image.  I had my fingers crossed!

As you can see, it wasn’t selected for the cover, but it is still a nice honor to have been published in the Showcase section – so close!

We have decided to add an additional  weekend photography workshop in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in Southern California this Spring.

I have been teaching a couple of workshops a year each winter for many years now.  There is lots to see and do there with and without the desert wildflowers, although the flowers are always a bonus!  Hopefully this year we will have some wildflowers.  Late last summer, Anza-Borrego was about the only area in California that received a good rainfall – as did much of Nevada and Arizona.  Since then, a few more storms have dumped rain in the area leaving me some reason to have optimism.

But even without wildflowers, there is plenty to see and learn – let me know if you have any questions, otherwise follow the above link for more details.

As I have done for a number of years now, I thought I would share my favorite photos from 2014, and some of the reasons why they are favorites.

I have been doing two Alaska Brown Bear Photo Tours each summer for many years now, and these tours never fail to produce, including this image which is my favorite of the year.  Cute pose, great morning light – this was a wonderful year for bears!  Note, I do have a couple of spots left for the August trip.

I love fur seal pups – so cute with tons of personality.  And just when you think they can’t get any cuter, estimate vary, but maybe as few as one in a thousand are born leucistic with blond color morph.

Back home from Antarctica at last!  You wouldn’t know it is January in Alaska – 46 degrees and no snow!  I love these beautiful birds.
