Lupine, Chugach National Forest, Alaska.
I found a beautiful field of lupine yesterday I have said it before, but lupine is an amazing wildflower. I have seen it in some of the warmest places on earth – Death Valley, and in some of the coldest – Denali National Park.
To get the soft purple glow, I framed this between two other lupine which were very close to the camera and thus completely out of focus.

I heard a fair amount of noise outside last week at about 10:00 in the evening – looked outside and was surprised to see a helicopter being refueled in mid flight over Resurrection Bay! I knew they did this with jets, but I’ll be honest, I had no idea they could do this with helicopters.
Since I have 3 Facebook friends who are former military helicopter pilots, I’m not about to try to identify these birds, but maybe one of them will know a bit more. The next morning I read in the paper about the beginning of the Northern Edge 2011 training exercises – I assume this was part of this training.
Update: These are HH 60 Pavehawks being areofueled by a KC-130.

So this is huge, exciting news! Time Magazine is doing a short story on photo tours in the upcoming June 20th issue, and my Alaska Bear and Puffin tour is one of the featured tours – in fact, it is the only North American photo tour mentioned in the article! All of my photo tours for 2011 are sold out, and although we haven’t put it on our website yet, we only have 3 spots left for the 2012 bear tour. Last night, we updated our bear tour page with the dates and pricing for 2012 – I wanted to share it here first because I have a feeling that when the 3 and a half million subscribers to Time Magazine read about it on June 20th we just might find 3 people to sign up for the last spots. It seems like a long ways off, but there is a lot of interest in this amazing tour, and very few openings during what I believe is the perfect timing.

We have been working hard to edit, key-word and process the photos and videos from our winter / spring trip. I would like to have this material completely processed so that I will have the time to hit the beautiful Alaska summer hard! It is such a wonderful time of year here.
So in the mean time, I thought I would share a few new photos from this winter, images I hadn’t posted here on the blog before including this one from Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
American Dipper chick, near Seward, Alaska.
Was out this morning looking for baby moose, but came home with this cute American Dipper chick – that is ok, these guys are a lot harder to find and photograph then moose.
I was told by someone watching the nest that this little guy fledged just yesterday. There is another large chick still in the nest that probably isn’t far behind. The adults were busy feeding the young, including this little guy in the photo. As soon as the adults would appear with small fish, this little guy would open his mouth real wide and began the begging which is what you see here – it was fascinating to watch!
A pregnant ? cow moose near Seward, Alaska.
This is the time of year that baby moose start to show up everywhere. I have been on the look-out, but haven’t found any out in the open enough for a photo. But, this gal looks like a good possibility, she definitly appeared pregnant, and is hanging around a scenic area not too far from town – I’ll be keeping an eye one her. 🙂

An unexpected family emergency has lead to a last minute opening for my bear and puffin photo tour. This is a rare opportunity – this tour originally sold out last October, and the 2012 tour is already half full and I haven’t even put it on the website yet. I had a pretty good standby list, but not surprisingly, those folks have now made other summer plans, so if you don’t have plans for this summer, you may just be in luck! This nursing cub was photographed during last years amazing tour. This is for the full week tour.

I’m really disappointed this person can’t make it – we originally began talking with her a year and a half ago and I know she would have been blown away! Hopefully she can make it next summer.
