Polar bears battle over whale blubber.
Home for a few days between polar bear trips! This was one of the more exciting moments as a adult bear challenged this mom with three cubs for a hunk of whale blubber she had been carrying and sharing with her cubs. After a bunch of growling, and even some swings with the paws, the challenger surprisingly came away with the spoils.

This is one of the prettiest areas in the United States, so it is disheartening to hear this area is being ravaged by a giant forest fire right now and will probably never look the same in my lifetime. The United States is experiencing many natural disasters right now, from wildfires to hurricanes. Mother nature is going to cause enough damage – to make it worse, this fire was caused by human with fireworks.
I understand firefighters are working hard right now to save this historic lodge. It has been nearly 14 years since I made these photos, I may have waited too long for a return.
