Another one from last month way up north!
Desert Photo Retreat Update September, 2018
I did a very short trip to Arizona at the end of September in which I have posted many images from the ranch I stayed at, but how about the Desert Photo Retreat? The good news, the game cams showed lots of gray fox, and javelina. Plus, bobcat, coyote and skunk. The unexpected surprise, lots of deer including a decent buck. Although I have seen deer in the canyon, they have only been to our property on occasion, and never a buck. They are very skittish.
That said, there wasn’t any huge surprises like a mountain lion, which will show one day – even mountain lion researchers have told me this. Also no ringtail or coati, two animals we have had in the past. But all and all, it was very active. I have written about this before, but I continue to be amazed at how often different species share the waterhole at the same time. Here is a sample.

To silhouette or not to silhouette – which do you like better?
To silhouette or not to silhouette – which do you like better?
I had been exposing for the cowgirls, Fay and Tabatha. But as that sky colored up, I thought a silhouette would look cool as well, so I exposed for the sky and captured the scene both ways.
Antarctica at a discount!
I have written in the past why I think the Cheesmans’ trips to Antarctica are among, if not the best, especially for photographers. Well there is good news and bad news. First the bad. For a variety of reasons, this upcoming February / March is going to be the last trip Cheesmans’ is offering to Antarctica. It is unfortunate, but the smaller boats that offer the best experience are becoming prohibitively expensive. I go into far more detail if you follow the link above, but most locations in Antarctica allow only 100 people on shore at any give time, so if you are on a vessel with 200 folks, you will now spend 50% less time on shore. You really want to be on a 100 passenger ship if you can.
So what is the good news? Cheesmans’ is offering a 10% discount on this final trip to the peninsula! I can’t remember a time where they have offered a discount. If you have any questions at all about Antarctica, or the company, feel free to contact me as I’ll be in the home office for the next month or so (rare! ). I should mention, my Arizona obligations are preventing me from joining the staff on this trip, but many of my favorite staff are working on this trip so you will be in good hands.
