Janine and I, along with fellow Alaska photographer Patrick Endres just got back from a wonderful couple nights backpacking in the bottom of the Grand Canyon.  We had a wonderful, wide range of weather including rain – it is actually snowing a bit today as I write this.  This was from the evening before – way down in the distance you can actually see Bright Angel Canyon, the location of our campground.  I’ll post more images as I have internet.

Alaska Shorebird Migration

Western sandpipers earlier this week, Cordova, Alaska.

Home from a wonderful week in Cordova!  We had great weather and lots of birds.  This year, for the first time I was able to watch and photograph the migration from the Delta, something few people are able to experience.  Millions of birds pass through this strategic location every spring.    This image was from Hartney Bay.

I’m home for one day, unpacking, repacking and off to the Grand Canyon and Zion!

Well after such a busy winter, it was really nice to have a whole month at home!  It went way too fast!

Tomorrow I begin a fun, busy stretch of travel.  I begin with a week in Cordova helping out a with a couple of photo tours during the shorebird migration.  I’m home for a day before flying to Arizona where we are going to meet up with a good friend and fellow photographer from Fairbanks for some backpacking in the Zion and the Grand Canyon.  We were able to obtain permits for Bright Angel Campground pictured above from a trip two years ago – I can’t wait to go back!

Then in June I’m back in Alaska for a trip across the state to the North Slope.  Followed by my bear tour and a trip into Prince William Sound.  So, I’ll post when I can, but I may miss blocks of time due to lack of internet.  In the meantime, here are photo from our last Grand Canyon trip.

Now that I’m seeing more migrating birds passing through Seward, I’m getting excited to be heading back over to Cordova this Saturday for the amazing shorebird migration – first time in two years.  Like two years ago, I’ll be helping guide two photo / bird tours while I’m there, one for Discovery Voyages, and one for Cheeseman’s Ecological Tours.

Words, and for that matter, photos are unable to do justice to the amazing sight of seeing tens of thousands of shorebirds flying, in beautiful flocks – see the color and patterns change as they “dance” in the air is mesmerizing.

For Arbor Day, how could I go with anything other then one of the most magnificent tries on earth, the giant Sequoias!  Even if I had to dig back in the archives to a trip about 12 years ago.

Ice Road Truckers

The Dalton Highway was featured for a number of years of the TV show Ice Road Truckers.  Here is a truck driving that same “highway”, late and night under an aurora sky, as it makes its way towards Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.   This is a combination of two exposures, one for the bright lights of the truck, and a second, much longer one for the aurora.  I exposed the truck for 2.5 seconds at f/1.4 and iso 1600, then once the truck left the frame, I captured a second image with a 6 second exposure.

It has been a wet month – so when the sun popped out last night, I couldn’t resist photographing the mountains across from our house, even though I have a million photos of them already – now I have a million and one! 🙂
