This was one beautiful iceberg – photographed during the whale and bear trip.
2016 Alaska Whale and Bear Photo Tour

This brown bear catching a salmon at Anan was one of 18 black or brown bears we photographed there this year.
Again next year I’m doing another Alaska Whale / Glacier / Bear photo tour aboard a yacht in Southeast Alaska. As great as this years trip was, I think next year will be even better! Here is why.
- It will be longer, and will include an extra day and night on the yacht.
- We will start in Ketchikan and end in downtown Juneau and this trip includes lodging and a welcome dinner at Cape Fox, the nicest hotel in Ketchikan.
- I’m going to be using a beautiful 87 foot yacht – 50% bigger than the yacht I have used in the past, but same number of people.
- This yacht has more areas to relax, but also more areas to photograph from, including covered areas nearly 360 degrees around the ship. Views from onboard are also excellent.
- I’m using the longest running operator in Southeast, these guys are the ones that started the Southeast cruising in the early 80’s and know all the secret spots.
- The extra day gives us more time with whales, but still allows for at least two bear viewing locations including the world famous Anan where at one time this year we had 4 black bears and 4 brown bears fishing at the same time!

Mount Iliamna
Just back from my Alaska Bear Photo Tour on the heals of my Alaska Whale and Bear tour. This wraps up two incredible weeks of photography – one of the most productive stretches I have ever experienced. We had great weather, even in Ketchikan known for its 200 inches of rain a year. Saw almost 50 bears, had numerous, very active whales, incredible scenery and really fun guests! I have so much to share!
For those who have traveled with me on previous bear trips – this is Pavlov cubs. Pavlov was one of our favorites bears and spent hours playing with the cub as she raised it. Unfortunately it “Pav” met her demise earlier this spring, but it is nice to see her offspring doing well.
Anan Creek
Back from a wonderful Alaska whale, bear and glacier photo tour! We had awesome weather and photo opportunities! Lots to share. Today, off to Seattle then Anchorage and start a bear trip tomorrow – lots of bears, hard to beat!
Traveling Fool
Just finished a wonderful month at home in Seward, Alaska. Was able to get a lot of office work done, along with some photography (never enough), plenty of mountain running, cross-fit classes and even some standup paddle boarding. It is a rare treat to be home for the month of July!
But, that is about to change. Flying today to Petersburgh for my whale and bear trip. Then have a bear trip, some assignment work, three polar bear trips before heading to South Georgia for a wonderful trip with the Cheeseman Ecology Safaris. With such a fun but busy schedule over the next few months, my posting activity will likely drop off a bit, but I’ll share images when I can.
