A couple of photos of a bald eagle from last week seems like the perfect photo to share on this fourth of July weekend.

Lupine Bear

Brown Bear, Lake Clark National Park, Alaska.

Every year I strive to capture brown bears in the fields of lupine, but most years we have little success. This year however was completely different! We had more photo opportunities with bears in the lupine then in my other 16 years visiting Lake Clark N.P. combined! I think it was in part because it was a great year for lupine – it was everywhere. But maybe more importantly was the abundance of angelica amongst the lupine. The bears don’t eat lupine, so you usually see them quickly walking through the fields, but they eat a lot of angelica, so this kept them in the fields for much longer.

Keeping Watch

Keeping a close eye on the meadow. Too bad that field of lupine around the cub wasn’t in bloom. The cold, wet summer wasn’t good for some of the wildflowers.

Is it safe mom?

Is is safe mom? What is interesting, it can be challenging to capture bears actually looking towards the camera. The bears at the places I visit pretty much ignore humans except maybe for brief moments like with yesterday’s cub. When we do get moments like in this photo, it almost always means there are other bears in the meadow behind us that have the bears attention. Lake Clark National Park, Alaska.
