Hanalei Bay, Kauai, Hawaii.
Janine and I were watching and photographing some surfers on the outer edges of Hanalei Bay earlier this week. There was only one other person on the shore of this beautiful bay – the girl pictured above. The setting was so perfect that I just had to find the nerve to ask if I could hire her to pose for a couple of minutes. Fortunately, she agreed.

This is great Ron! I’m sure it helps to approach her when you have a wife in tow. A solo photog might be more creepy. I mean not me of course, but in general. 🙂
Lucky you, finding such a great model already there. Good for you for asking!

@ Richard Yes I agree. If I was by myself, I would have never asked – it does come across a bit creepy. Thanks!
Thanks John!
Reminds me of Gary’s story about almost getting the beat down by the bf over that girl in the surfboard. Yikes!
Ask and you shall receive. Nice work. Nice model. Nicer wife.

Thanks Milo!
Hi Stefania! Sure. I used f/5 and 800 at 1/800th of a second with a Canon 5D Mark II and a 70-200 lens at 200.
This came together fairly fast so I didn’t have a lot of time to think about my settings. Since the sun had dropped behind the mountains, I was concerned about having enough light and shutter speed. I liked having the girl against a soft, somewhat out of focus background. But, because the background was so nice, and I did end up with plenty of shutter speed, I could have easily used f/8.
Wonderful portrait.
