Skagway Train

Another photo from last month’s historic train ride into White Pass from Skagway, Alaska.  If you take an Alaskan cruise, this excursion would be a must.  We have many Skagway, Alaska photos.

    Hi Sherri,

Yeah it kind of was. There is a little platform between each car where they allow people to stand. I leaned out as far as possible to include as much of the hill side as possible.

    Thanks,

    Ron

  2. It is really amazing to think about the weight traveling around on the side of those cliffs, let alone thinking about the guys that built that track! Looks like an amazing trip.

I agree Mark – it is really amazing to think it was built at the turn of the century with with few of the tools available today – it was built mostly with dynamite, hand tools and a whole lot of men.

If you are on a cruise, you might not have much time in Skagway except to do the train and walking around town. I would definitely leave time for exploring the town of Skagway – it is the most interesting town in SE Alaska.

  6. So many of your photographs just remind me of my travels in Alaska. I travelled on this train but was travelling about on the Alaska Marine Highway. By the way I have found the Outdoor Photographer on the internet and duly ordered a copy. I wonder how long it will take !!

  7. The Narrow Gauge….went on that ride in 1959 from Whitehorse to Skagway, then back 3 days later, with my mom and brother to see Aunt/Uncle who lived in Skagway. We had lived in Seward for 10 yrs, but father passed away while working on the AKRR and mom, bro and I were making the long drive on the AlCan back ” home”to Kansas City, but making the “side-trip” to Skagway first to say goodbye to moms sister. What a ride that was on the train…scary, but thrilling !
