Photographing the endangered Peninsular Bighorn Sheep in Anza-Borrego State Park was high on our list, so we were thrilled to be able to spend time with this large group today on our first morning in Borrego.
This group was about 20 in number including rams and a couple of pregnant ewes. Some high clouds helped soften the light. We spent a fair amount of time with these guys shooting a variety of close-ups and some images like this one that included the desert environment. It is great to be back shooting!

I hate it when I see someone else post a photo that I want to shoot. 🙂
How close were you able to get to the sheep?

They were close! I was using a 100-400 at 100. 400 for head shots.
Wow. I only have a 70-300 but w/ the 1.6x sensor crop. Palm Canyon? Do they spook easily?

Yeah you would have been fine, I was on a full frame camera.
They didn’t spook easy, they were down for a quick drink. I don’t think they are usually that low, at least not for long, that is what I was told anyways.
This is what Marlene and I are after. remember us ? I need to photograph large males, any suggestions

Hi John,
I have to admit, I’m drawing a blank – where did we meet?
The best place for the rams was in Borrego Palm Canyon above the campground. They are often on those hills, but sometimes they drop into the valley for water. They are pretty easy to shoot when they are down low. Good luck!
