Bohemian Waxwing

I love these colorful birds, but they sure can be tough to photograph.  Hundreds would descend on the tree at a time, and then they would feed in constant motion.  It was hard to pick a single bird out to photograph.  Then, all it takes is a crow to fly by, and the hundreds leave in a giant mass.  I almost got hit by birds a couple of times!

That pattern was repeated a number of times before I was finally able to get this photo.

I usually use flash for some fill light, but here, because it was so dark, I made it the main light source.

Seward Harbor Sunrise

This beautiful sunrise was Monday morning.

This time of year, because the sun rises at such a shallow angle compared to the horizon, the colorful portion of the sunrise lasts 15 minutes or more.  I always have to adjust my thinking when I travel to a place like Arizona.  There the sun rises nearly perpendicular to the horizon, and the best color can disappear after 5 minutes or less.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Tomorrow is a big holiday in the U.S.  We will be meeting up with family in Girdwood, Alaska, for a few days, and won’t be traveling with a laptop, so this will be the last post this week.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Sticking with the tree theme – here is another image from snow storm last weekend.

The gloomy, dark storm clouds moving up Resurrection Bay, really helped emphasis the fresh white snow on the branches.

This weather has me thinking it might be a perfect time to point out my post on winter photography tips.

Mountain Ash Berries

These mountain ash berries in our backyard were buried by another foot of fresh powder snow yesterday.

Lots of precipitation, along with unusually cold temperatures made for a lousy summer, but those same conditions have made for an awesome winter!Read More

We are done converting, adjusting and key-wording photos from the last few months – that was pretty fast for us!  I’m not sure about this photo, but it is an image that struck a cord with Janine, so I’m posting it for her.  🙂

Take a look at more of our Canyonlands National Park photos.

I photographed sunset from this beautful viewpoint a couple different evenings on our trip.

If you look closely, you can see the White Rim Road.  The best overnight camping sites along this 4 wheel drive road are by permit only and fill months in advance.  I would love to camp down there someday, hopefully on our next visit.  We have friends from Seward who have mountain biked the trail and said it was amazing.

Here are more Canyonlands National Park photos.
